Our Whole Lives: OWLs Comprehensive Sex Education
Are you a parent of a teenager who would like to see more holistic human sexuality education for your child? Would you like a program offered that provides accurate information and a safe and supportive environment for questions and discussion? If so, mark your calendars for Tuesday May 22 from 6:30-8 for a Parent Orientation to see if Our Whole Lives is a good fit for your family.
Parents, guardians, and educators all face the challenge of creating environments that support and nurture sexual health. Young people need sexuality education programs that model and teach caring, compassion, respect, and justice. Next fall Granby Youth Services will be offering two holistic human sexuality programs. Our Whole Lives, offered to 7th & 8th grade students and to 10th-12th grade students, addresses the attitudes, values, and feelings that youth have about themselves and the world. The program is not focused solely on preventing or reducing problems such as high rates of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. While the program certainly equips youth with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to avoid these consequences, it has the more proactive goal of helping youth to become sexually healthy people who feel good about themselves and their bodies, remain healthy, and build positive, equitable, loving relationships.
The 7th-8th Grade program will run Sept-May in 25 90-min sessions.
The 10th-12th Grade program will run Sept-May in 12 2-hr sessions.
Over the course of the year we will cover the following topics in an inclusive and developmentally appropriate manner: What Is Sexuality, Examining Values, Anatomy & Physiology, Personal Concerns about Puberty, Body Image, Gender Identity, Gender Expression- Roles, & Stereotypes, Sexual Orientation, Sexuality & Disability, Healthy Relationships, Relationship Skills, Sexuality-Social Media, & the Internet, Bullying, Responsible Sexual Behavior, Consent Education, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Pregnancy, Contraception & Safer Sex, and more. The cost of this program is to be determined. Scholarships will be available.

Teen to Teen Peer Education Program
Interested students from the Middle and High School are invited to join our T2T peer education program. The premise of a peer educator program is that teens are more likely to listen to peers about issues. If we educate students about specific topics that are a potential issue for teens, they will have the accurate information to pass on to peers if and when the topic arises organically in a natural setting.
The YSB T2T program will earn participants community service credit, and will also look pretty good on college applications! Each peer educator will be expected to attend four of eight training sessions to be held throughout the school year. A variety of topics will be covered from the risks associated with under age use of marijuana, to signs of depression, from reducing unwanted teen pregnancies and STD's to issues facing LGBTQIA youth. Participants and their families will be given a schedule of topics, and are able to pick and choose the topics they are comfortable with learning about. Parents are always welcome to attend the training's as well.
If your teen is interested in learning more about the T2T Peer Educator program, please give me a call!
