If you are a parent that is counting the days till the kids are back in school, I hear you! I have had those summers!! I have to admit that this year, I could happily extend vacation. The kids are older now, but not too old I guess. My teenager is old enough and responsible enough to pick up the slack when his younger sister is home (between camps and visits to Grand Ma's house) but young enough to not have the social life to present parental stress...no parities, significant girlfriends, etc. Between part time jobs and activities, his time was well accounted for, and I get to leave lists of things to be done with the expectation that he will actually get around to doing them!
So if you have little ones, and are exhausted with the run around of driving to camp, picking up from camp, arranging play dates, dealing with "Mom,Dad, I'm bored" etc, there is light at the end of the tunnel. School is starting soon, and summers will not always be so hectic. It will likely get better! I have found that parenting provides unexpected grace periods where things just seem to click. The challenge is to recognize and appreciate them when they happen because they are typically (in my experience anyway) short lived as the next developmental challenge asserts itself and all our tried and true parenting techniques go out the window like last years fashion fad. Chaos will once again reign for awhile until as parents we figure out how to cope.
So, the countdown to the new school year is winding down. Enjoy the last moments of this summer vacation and make a note to look for and appreciate this years charmed moments of grace. If you look for them, you are likely to find them. Like a sunset, they may be fleeting, but if you take the time to appreciate them, their beauty can carry you thru the rain and clouds that might follow!
